Blame it on a rush of blood to the head...
Sorry about my lack of updates: I was on Thanksgiving sabbatical at the beach with the family. God bless California that you can spend Thanksgiving Day with sand between your toes.

Way to go, Gwyneth and Coldplay guy!

I learned many things from Page Six this morning, including the fact that JD Salinger is almost deaf, Lenny Kravitz is dating Nicole Kidman to boost his career, Britney Spears is making another movie, and the Darkness is going to be on the cover of Spin. I'm sure it's all completely true, too.

Jack White pulls double duty as an actor and singer in the upcoming "Cold Mountain". Which, if you think about it, is what Renee Zellweger did in "Chicago"! What goes around comes around.

Get out of town! Nicole Richie is dating Justin Guarini?! Who, by the way, just got dropped from his record label. Yeah, surprising, I know.

Backstage with the Strokes! Debauchery, alcohol, and sex, right? Eh, not so much.

A first-grade teacher tells her class, "Hey, wizen up, kiddos, Santa's not real." Nice, real nice.

Steve Martin wins my eternal devotion with his "interview" with Pablo Picasso.

Phantom Planet goes all dark 'n broody on their new album. (Is it just me, or does the lead singer bear a strong resemblance to Jesus?)

Does Rolling Stone have a Justin Timberlake cover quota to fill or something? It's getting a little stalker-ish.

She'd be in the kitchen, I would start the fire...
Have you ever driven from Los Angeles to Monterey and back again in 36 hours? I have! When friends get married, you go. Thanks to the lovely Johanna & Steve for doing all the driving and the majority of car DJ'ing. Good times were had.

Every third hit this page gets is about that song on the iPod commercial, so please let me help you out. The band is Jet, the song is "Are You Gonna Be My Girl", and their debut CD is "Get Born". You're welcome.

Cute as a button Kirsten Dunst is dating Jake Gyllenhaal. I know this isn't new news, but it still hurts.

Do you live in Manhattan and find yourself without plans tonight? That's why I'm here. Lou Reed (yes, THAT Lou Reed), will be at the Sixth Avenue Barnes & Noble tonight signing his new photography book, "Emotion In Action". Then you can hoof it over to the Union Square B&N and see photographer Annie Leibovitz talking about "American Music". Two words: holiday gifts.

Words escape me: Conan O'Brien is guesting on "Martha Stewart Living".

And while I have Conan on the brain, don't forget that the Strokes complete their monthlong residency tomorrow night on his show. Did you miss the past three weeks? Some lovely person has hosted the clips, so download and catch up.

Newsweek jumps the gun with their huge cover story on "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King". Not that I'm complaining, of course.

Jack & Meg do their thing in Washington D.C.

You know those Claymation holiday specials? I love them! And they're on again this year.

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 | 8:09 am
If there's one thing I know it's this, when I lose my sleep it's you I miss...
Oh, where to begin, where to begin? How about with the fact that I had insomnia last night and watched some of the worst television I have ever seen in my life. So bad that I don't even want to talk about it, okay? Let's just say that I might be traumatized.

Two bands that just keep on giving: Guided By Voices and Duran Duran. Hmmm, it seems nobody mentioned Duran Duran's fine cover of "911 Is a Joke". Pity.

Um, question. If High Times stops writing about pot, what will they write about? My money is on commercial airlines. It's not like their core subscribers are going to be lucid enough to know the difference.

With Thanksgiving coming up, I'm going to try and provide some survival tips so that you can make it through the holiday season. First up, if you're visiting family this year, you're probably going to need to be drunk.

And you might need some entertainment on the drive/flight/shuttle bus/train ride to Grandma's house. David Sedaris has a new CD out recorded at Carnegie Hall. Brilliant timing.

You can soothe those pre-travel jitters by listening to Sondre Lerche on KEXP at 2:30pm Pacific next Tuesday, November 25th. Or again, you can just get drunk.

"Four Million Californians Can't Be Wrong", proclaims the New Yorker. Oh, I beg to differ.

Downtown LA is making a comeback, which would make it the new Echo Park (which was the new Silverlake, which was the new Los Feliz, just in case you're keeping track of these things).

And finally, Prime Minister Tony Blair is a fan of the Darkness. And the Foo Fighters. Do you think he burns CDs for President Bush?

Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 | 8:13 am
Un bon cur n'est jamais petit...
Once again, I almost dropped the ball. The Shins are playing live on KCRW today at 11:15. I'm sorry, I really need to be more on top of these things.

I had no idea that Edith Piaf and Jean Cocteau were lovers! And wow, were they screwed up...

...but not nearly as screwed up as Rimbaud. He takes the absinthe-filled cake.

Beyonc who? Britney what? Finally, a music magazine for people who have no idea how to download mp3s.

It seems like Ryan Adams is going on tour again, so keep an eye open. I can't say that I disagree with this review of his new album, but he's one of my favorite live performers.

Michael Stipe drops amino acid at the Chateau Marmont. Oh, how times have changed.

Every time I see a commercial for HBO's "Angels in America", I get goosebumps.

With all of those swell holiday parties coming up (please do not be that person who wears antlers, okay?), you need to know how to be the perfect guest. Yes, that means you have to mingle.

Wednesday, Nov. 05, 2003 | 8:15 am
Last week I had the strangest dream where everything was exactly how it seemed...
Okay, jury duty is over and things are back to normal. Always trust a judge who wears a bow tie, that's what I've learned from the whole experience.

Hey kids! Do YOU have what it takes to be a porn star? The competition is fierce this year!

Inane, frivolous, and/or stupid things drive me up the wall like nothing else. So when I heard that the US Postal Service sent a "cease and desist" letter to the band Postal Service for using the name, I had to do some deep breathing exercises.

What the...? Bryan Adams had an affair with Princess Diana? That's what his current girlfriend is saying. Sweet of her to bring this up now. She's a keeper, Bryan!

Nell Freudenberger has done the right thing by earning the hatred of the literary world, even before she published her first book, "Lucky Girls". Read the book--it's good!--and then go see her at Borders on November 5th. Hey, that's tonight! Where does the time go? Borders, 100 Broadway, (212) 964-1988. 5:30pm.

Tom Ford strolls away from Gucci.

Cupcakes are almost the perfect food, except for that whole "lacking nutrients" thing. Get your fill while you can.

All rise...
Oh Lord. I am doing my civic duty this week, which means updates will be more of a privilege than a right until I'm back safe & sound.

I can't even begin to tell you about the things I've seen today in the jury room, but let me just say this: if you ever, ever find yourself in a courtroom as a defendant, PLEAD DOWN! You don't want these people deciding your fate.

Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 | 8:21 am
I know you and I know it won't take you long to make me smile...
Have you heard about the Elliott Smith tribute concert next week? Beck, Bright Eyes, Beth Orton, Rilo Kiley, and more will be onhand to celebrate his music and life. Tickets are going on sale every day at Ticketweb, so keep checking often. Need more info? Hit up Sweet Adeline.

Uncle Jesse--oops, I mean John Stamos!--takes over from Antonio Banderas in Broadway's "Nine". It's a shame he got rid of his mullet, don't you think?

Why in the holy hell would you travel with $1 million worth of jewelry? Nelly's accountant is probably popping Valium from a Pez dispenser by now.

I've been awash in pumpkins over the last several days. After having the baked mini pumpkins at the 17th Street Caf in Santa Monica last night (get them while you can!), I was also informed that I will be in charge of pumpkin carving this year. I am definitely one of those "triangle eyes & nose" traditionalists, fyi. No cutesy designs on my pumpkin.

If you're not working, it's important to stay busy. And by busy, I don't mean watching "A Wedding Story" on TLC. Need some ideas? I thought so.

Tonight, authors DBC Pierre and Dan Rhodes will be at Book Soup to talk about their most wonderful books "Vernon God Little" and "Timoleon Vieta Come Home". 7pm--don't be late! Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood (310) 659-3110

If you're just now starting to discover Johnny Cash's music or if you've been a fan since birth, the Museum of Television & Radio is hosting a Johnny Cash retrospective now through January 2004. Shows are rotating through the year, so check to see what's screening before you haul your ass across town. Museum of Television & Radio, 465 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills (310) 786-1000

Colson Whitehead, the 34-year-old overachieving author, will be at the Hammer Museum on Sunday, November 2nd at 5pm to talk about his new book "The Colossus of New York". I've mentioned this book before, haven't I? If not, I should have. Read it, it's great. UCLA Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles (310) 443-7000

If you're not into costumes, candy, and adorable little trick-or-treaters drooling all over your front porch, scoot on over to the Temple Bar for Cody ChestnuTT's live show at 11:30pm Halloween night. That way you can get a leg up on the Day of the Dead celebrations that start on November 1st. Temple Bar, 1026 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica (310) 393-6611

Need some driving music recommendations? This is what's stuck in my CD player right now--feel free to mix 'n match.

*The Strokes, "Room on Fire"

*Death Cab for Cutie, "Transatlanticism"

*Cat Stevens, "The Very Best of Cat Stevens"

*Mew, "Frengers"

Im in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who's still around the morning after...
Even though I'm 80 miles away from the California inferno, there's smoke everywhere around me. I had ash on my clothes yesterday. Think good thoughts for all those who are fighting & fleeing the fires, okay?

Oh, Elliott. Here's his last interview with Rolling Stone.

Here's a lovely contrast of two female role models out there today: Britney Spears on taking off her clothes and Tina Fey on fighting terrorists...

...or you could always just pick the transvestite role model in Eddie Izzard. Whatever floats your boat.

Did you New Yorkers get your tickets for the Bright Eyes show at the Used Book Cafe on Friday night? Costumes are being "encouraged", and don't try to pull that lame "I'm going as a college student" fake-costume trick. That's just lazy.

Notice anything different at Grand Central Station recently? no reason, just wondering.

After watching a Saturday afternoon marathon of "Jamie's Kitchen" on the Food Network, I'm a little burnt out on cute British chefs. But then I read his risotto recipe and found my second wind.

Can it be? Dubble Bubble is turning 75 today. God, it seems like just yesterday...speaking of which, does anyone remember the gum called Chewels? It was this little square of gum with this gel inside. Did I make this up, since no one I know seems to remember this?

Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 | 9:11 am
Instincts are misleading, you shouldn't think what you're feeling...
Oh, wow, I've finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up: a spy. Just pass the binoculars this way, please, and start watching your back.

The Strokes & The Rapture get reviewed in Sunday's New York Times. Speaking of which, I'm going to the Strokes' Palladium show this Wednesday, so make sure to say hi if you see me!

Also speaking of which, Amoeba is hosting The Rapture Wednesday night as well, at 6pm. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Palladium, fyi...

By now I'm sure you know that "Vernon God Little" won the Booker Prize, so if you haven't read it yet, do. Please do. Trust me. I would never lead you astray.

"Morning Becomes Eclectic" is knocking itself out this week with three live sets. Which bands, you ask? Well, Rufus Wainwright on 10/21, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on 10/22, and Death Cab for Cutie on 10/23. All at 11:15 Pacific. Of course.

A night out with Peaches proves to be not as dramatic as one might imagine.

Finally! iTunes gets its act together and opens a Windows-based service for the 90% of us who still haven't converted. Yet.

Fall is here, hear the yell, back to school, ring the bell...
It's the end of an era. After being voted 2003's Best Scenester in the Village Voice, Miss Modern Age has decided to shut down her fabulous site. Aww, come back soon, okay?

"Born Rich", the documentary filmed by a Johnson & Johnson heir that caused him to lose all his wealthy friends, will be on HBO on October 27th. By the way, did I mention that I've been getting HBO free for over a year, and I have no idea why?

In an effort to cut down on your stress level, New York has done extensive testing to find the best coffee in New York. As someone who just gave up caffeine last week, it pains me to read this.

This piece is for the lovely Adri, a lifelong fan who is somewhere in Boston at the moment: The Cure are making a new album. And Robert Smith shops on Amazon.

Jamie Oliver does it for the kids every night this week on the Food Network.

The Strokes do funky crazy stuff in their new video for "12.51", a la the movie "Tron". Click on "Music" to watch it for yourself. Personally speaking, I think it looks like a scene from the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade. And that's not a bad thing.

What is it about those White Stripes that makes me love them so? Well, for one, they went and played a show at a New Zealand elementary school. That is so rock 'n roll I can hardly stand it! (link from Triple Tremelo)

Thursday, Oct. 09, 2003 | 7:43 am
Inject the stars, make them glow...
Hey, all I can say is, I tried.

Speaking of which, what do you do after you're a gubernatorial candidate? Oh, nothing much, really. Just return to your normal life as a middleweight sumo wrestler or porn star. Same old, same old.

Hey, kids, don't drink! Archie & Jughead say it's bad!

I was recently diagnosed as being severely allergic to all forms of flour, wheat, dough, etc. Which means, of course, that I will never be able to eat a piece of pie for the rest of my life. Need I say how tragic this is?

Hee hee ha ha, yet another reason to not be a String Cheese Incident groupie: they're spreading Hepatitis A like wildfire.

REM must love me a whole lot because they're releasing a DVD set of all their videos over the past 15 years. If you're one of those impatient people, you can watch the video for "Bad Day" while you wait.

The LA Weekly scribes have been bustling all over this city just for you, reviewing shows like the Raveonettes, Interpol, Television, and The Stills. Say thank you!

Tuesday, Oct. 07, 2003 | 7:50 am
Pass me by, I'll be fine, just give me time...
Sorry for the delay, kiddie-winks, but I had a crazy time last week. I quit my job and had to wrap up all loose ends before stepping out. So right now I have no job and so much free time that it actually makes me nervous. So I'm going to read books and go to yoga and maybe--just maybe--cook something. It'll be good. I think.

But the first thing I have to do today is vote. Maybe you heard about our mortifying recall election. Please pray for Californians--we're in dire need.

But afterwards, maybe I should unwind by reading the new AS Byatt story in this week's New Yorker.

If you're jobless and living in New York, you should visit the Robert Mapplethorpe show curated by Cindy Sherman at the Sean Kelly Gallery. If you're a west coaster like me, we can get our culture at the Rose Gallery, which has exhibits from William Eggleston and Dorothea Lange. Sean Kelly Gallery, 528 West 29th Street, (212) 239-1181. Rose Gallery, Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Avenue #G-5, Santa Monica (310) 264-8440.

Wow. It's a modern-day superhero, complete with gold lam pants and a cape. That takes some guts.

So of course you heard that Damien Rice won the Shortlist Music Prize, but did you hear that someone spit on Bright Eyes? So dirty.

And in case you haven't been wooed yet by Damien's album "O", you can hear his live acoustic set from KCRW.

Another excellent thing you should know about is Colson Whitehead. His new book, "The Colossus of New York", is good stuff.

Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 | 9:28 am
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds, because you're mine...
Sweet Christ, the world really is ending! The Milky Way is cannibalizing Sagittarius. Born between November 22 and December 21? Sucks to be you!

If you're burned out from all the fabulous White Stripes shows you went to this week, travel over to the westside and unwind at the Abbot Kinney Street Festival this Sunday, September 28th...

...but if you're still left wanting more after three shows, you're probably gonna want to pick up this week's NME. (Thanks to Miss Kate and the White Stripes MB for the links!)

What makes the Dandy Warhols so great? Courtney Taylor-Taylor thinks he has it figured out: "I finally printed up lyrics for this [album] because I started to realize my lyrics are fucking awesome." Hey, say it loud and say it proud, Courtney. Don't hold back.

Wanna watch The Strokes make some music? Yeah, I thought so.

And finally, Rolling Stone redeems itself.

Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 | 8:45 am
Autumn in New York, it's good to live it again...
As if you didn't already know this, Starbucks are taking over Manhattan. Nannies and high school kids seem to be the primary victims.

Say what now? The Mooney Suzuki are teaming up with the Matrix. They're the ones that did Avril's "Sk8ter Boi" and some of Liz Phair's latest album. This should be very, very interesting.

Rolling Stone has decided to start bashing the White Stripes for their stripped-down style. Freakin' bipolar editors.

Oh, happy day! It's the first day of autumn. Ever since I finished school, autumn has become my favorite season! So grab a cup of apple cider, wrap a scarf around your neck, and watch the fall foliage right at your desk. (Of course, it's supposed to be 82 degrees here in Los Angeles today--I'm in a bit of denial).

Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 | 7:57 am
Now you don't need money when you look like that, do you honey?
Oh my my my my my. Jake Gyllenhaal goes to IKEA and eats Swedish meatballs and lingonberry juice. I think I'm in love.

The Austin City Limits festival is starting up and they've got a "comically extensive" list of bands ready to perform.

Who's making all that racket? It's probably your rock star neighbor.

I don't know how I feel about this, but No Doubt are going to cover my very favorite 80s song, Talk Talk's "It's My Life". Please don't screw it up. Pretty please.

The LA Weekly goes all blushy and googly-eyed for Jet, Kings of Leon, and their ilk. Conveniently timed to their sold-out show this Wednesday at the Troubador.

Good thing Karen O. & Har Mar Superstar are getting along so famously, since some people don't really seem to like them (Mr. Rock Star Critic, I'm looking in your direction).

I just want to go on record saying that I loved "Lost in Translation". Loved loved loved it. Check out the trailer if you're still not convinced.

What's my current favorite book, you say? Oh, you're so sweet to ask.

Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 | 7:11 am
Was she willing when she sat and posed the pretty photograph?
Ryan Adams has decided to terrify me by putting scary bunnies and evil clowns on his website. He's also added his new song "So Alive", which is decidedly less frightening.

This girl takes the art of latte-making a bit seriously. The people at Starbucks could stand to take some lessons from her.

It's Fashion Week in New York. Again. How many times a year are they doing Fashion Week now? Is anyone keeping a count?

James St. James is hands-down one of the brightest, nicest, and snarkiest (but only in the best of ways) people on either coast. Maybe you saw "Party Monster" already, but did you read the book? The book's better.

There's a beautiful profile of Diane Arbus in this Sunday's NY Times Magazine, timed almost perfectly to her new exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. If you can't make it, check out a sampling of her work.

Jonathan Lethem's new book "Fortress of Solitude" is out today, and people are freaking out. Some people think he's going to win the Pulitzer Prize (knock wood). You can see & hear for yourself on Monday, September 29th at the Astor Place B&N and Wednesday, October 1st at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena.

What's that? You want to download the new Strokes song "12:51"? Well, knock yourself out.

Tuesday, Sept. 09, 2003 | 7:57 am
Don't wanna be taught to be no fool...
Who knew there was a science behind Slurpees? Hey, if you guys ever need a taste-taster, call me. I have very refined Slurpee tastes.

Y'know, there just has to be a better solution to file-sharing than suing a bunch of teenagers and their parents. There just has to be.

Now where was this plan when I was in high school? If you live in West Palm Beach, you can graduate from high school in three years, no strings attached. Well, except for the fact that you have to live in Florida. That's kind of a stumbling block for me.

They're not officially posted yet, but LA tickets for the Strokes shows have been announced. October 22nd at the Hollywood Palladium and October 23rd at the Shrine Auditorium. The Shrine? Really?

Monday, Sept. 08, 2003 | 8:05 am
I'd settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need...
Well, this is surely one of the strangest stories I've read in a while. Vincent Gallo pisses off a chocolatier who...oh, just read it. It gets complicated.

I think Outkast is one of the most interesting bands making music right now, but what really gets me is Andre 3000's seersucker suits! Classy, so classy.

Susan Sontag is apparently a fan of fischerspooner.

Step aside, Zelda! It turns out that F. Scott had a better muse than you. So sorry. Better luck next time.

Those stage lights must be looking a wee bit bright to Michael Stipe.

Perhaps restless after a lazy summer, bands are starting to tour again. This is only good news. The Strokes have started setting up dates with Kings of Leon, The Mars Volta hit up Texas and the like, while Guided By Voices say hello to the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip October 16th. Whew! Hope you've been saving your lunch money.

If you haven't, you can always rely on the free shows at Amoeba to get you through, starting with The Kills on September 22nd. It's their only LA show, too. Aren't they sweet to think of us?

Thursday, Sept. 04, 2003 | 8:13 am
That's what it's all a-bout!
I must say that it was a complete pleasure to wake up this morning and read an article on author Charles Baxter in this morning's New York Times. Have you read him? You should. If you read him and liked his work, check out Kent Haruf's "Plainsong" for a little back-to-school reading.

I hope I'm not too late! The Dandy Warhols have an acoustic set airing on KCRW this morning at 11:15am. I'm sure it'll be archived online, but it's always more special when you can listen live, know what I mean?

Speaking of those crazy Warholians, remember when their acoustic set at the Used Book Cafe got canceled due to the blackout brouhaha? Well, the Cafe is making it up to us with a live set from....The Bangles!!! October 4th. Mark your calendars.

Michael Stipe, Coldplay, Beck, and a boatload of others wax philosophic on their most famous lyrics.

There was a gigantic article on Miss Sofia Coppola in this weekend's New York Times. I'm really looking forward to her new film "Lost in Translation", just so you know. And if you live in Los Angeles, you can always go check out Heaven-27, her shop on Yucca Blvd. They sell the Milkfed t-shirt line there, including this one, which is my favorite. Heaven-27, 6316 Yucca Blvd., (323) 871-9044

Conversation of the Day: My favorite best friend in the entire world is getting married next June and she's drawing up her "do not play" music list for the reception. She takes this very, very seriously. So last night on the phone...

Her: No "Mambo #5", no "Macarena", none of that.

Me: What about "Funky Chicken"?

Her: No! No "Funky Chicken", no "Hokey Pokey", no songs with animals in the title!

Me: But there's no animal in the "Hokey Pokey"

Her: (brief pause) But remember how Gumby's pet horse was Pokey? It makes me think of a horse, so it's out.

How can you not be friends with someone who thinks like this? I heart her.

Friday, Aug. 29, 2003 | 9:16 am
12:51 is the time my voice found the words...
Just when you thought I was gone for good! Sorry for my brief hiatus, life has been pretty crazy. But have no fear, I'm back with great news...

...starting with the news that The Mars Volta are playing All Tomorrow's Parties on November 8th! Joining them are Cat Power, !!!, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, The Shins, and a plethora of other wonderful music. Tickets go on sale September 6th, but you can buy them at Amoeba for no fees or "convenience charges". Beautiful stuff.

Speaking of Amoeba, they've released their Best of 2003 list, so now you can realize how mainstream and boring your own musical tastes are.

And in more concert news, Death Cab for Cutie are stopping in LA on November 14th with Nada Surf in tow. No word on a venue yet. I'll get back to you on that one.

Evan Dando & Rhett Miller are coming to the Avalon theatre (ne the Palace) on September 25th. But you've probably seen the playbills posted all over the city for this show. They're everywhere!

The Strokes have a lovely chat with Gideon Yago about their new album, "Room on Fire". And never ones to sit back on their laurels, NME have jumped in with their opinions on the new stuff. (Thanks once again to yhnr.org)

If you're trying to kill time at work before the holiday weekend, try reading the new short story from Dave Eggers in the New Yorker.

Awww...Wendell and Cass are just two gay penguins in love. Is that so wrong!?

For all you kids moving into your NYU dorm rooms this weekend, two things for you: 1) I hope you're not stuck living in Weinstein, and 2) pick up the back to school supplement in this week's Voice. Good luck! Learn a lot!

Aaahhh! This is what I get for procrastinating! The Butterfly Pavilion at LA's Natural History Museum is ending this weekend. To think I almost missed it...for shame. Natural History Museum, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007

(213) 763-DIN0. $3 for adults, $1 for kids

Web Query of the Day: I never like to post what people are searching for when they come to my site. I value their privacy, blah blah blah. But I just have to ask the person who searched for "what to wear to a bow wow concert", what'd you end up wearing? I hope I was somewhat helpful in your search!

Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 | 8:02 am
Do you have a FLAG?
Today is going to be one of those crazy, rushed, "Where's my coffee?" kind of days, but here are three things you need to know about.

1) Eddie Izzard is picking his favorite songs to play when he's a guest DJ on "Morning Becomes Eclectic" next Monday. It airs at 11:15. Don't forget!

2) The Sunset Junction Street Fair is this weekend, so pray to the parking gods and hope for the best. I've been warned, however, that sometimes the band schedule can change abruptly (for good & for bad), so make sure to keep checking before you trek over there.

3) Louis Cannizzaro is appearing at Book Soup tonight. You know his artwork, I know you do. Remember that infamous shopping list? I thought you might. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., (310) 659-3110.

(Lovely art credit: Louis Cannizzaro)

Have fun! Be safe! Drink a lot of beer for me!

Oh, yeah. PS. I heard some of the new Strokes songs from their Japan shows last month. Fucking fabulous.

You grew up ridin the subways, running with people...
Woo-hoo, let's hear for Los Angeles strip mall restaurants! Of course they mentioned Palms Thai, where everyone's favorite Thai Elvis impersonator resides, and my personal favorite, Alejo's. Ohhh, Alejo's...go if you can.

Remember that cute little baby on the cover of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album? Well, he's now eleven years old and on the cover of the new Skinny Puppy CD. Look, kid, stop hogging all the album covers, okay? Let the other children have a turn.

More "What did the famous people do during the blackout?" news from Village Voice.

Trend of the Day: Flash mobs are so July. This fall, it's all about the subway party.

"Just before the Clark Street Station, where a police officer is always stationed, Reggie Osse, a lawyer and the appointed bartender for the night, yelled out: "Everybody look at your shoes! Everybody act like you're going to work!" The officer glanced over sleepily. The doors closed. A shout went up and the train pulled away."

Maybe us Los Angeles people can try this on the Metrolink sometime. Maybe.

I am alone but adored by a hundred thousand more...
David Blaine is at it again. 44 days in a glass box hanging over the Thames in London. And of course Harmony Korine is documenting the whole shebang.

Those critics over at Pitchfork don't like the Damien Rice album, "O". I think they must be sniffing glue over there. If you and I are think alike, don't forget that Damien's doing a show October 4th at the Henry Fonda Theatre. (Seriously, who's booking all these great shows? I love you!)

The Gap is trying to persuade Britney & Justin to reunite for a series of ads. Y'know, I'm not a financial wizard or anything, but if the Gap spent half as much time on improving their clothes as they did trying to woo celebrities, they might be able to turn their losses into profits.

What did the famous people do during last week's blackout? Well, if you're Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, you played a show with electricity that ran off the generators in a Starbucks truck. Now that's some creative problem solving.

Jhumpa Lahiri is trying to avoid that second book curse with "The Namesake". I read it last month and I'm here to say she has absolutely nothing to be worried about.

The new Dandy Warhols CD is out today! Rolling Stone gave it a ho-hum review, but the lovely Katy has heard a handful of songs on KEXP and can't stop raving about them. And I trust her a lot more than RS.

And if you're a KEXP fan AND you live in Seattle, make sure to attend their Parking Lot Barbeque this Thursday. Free beer! Free food! Good music! Tours of the studio! I'm so jealous.

Mysterious Disappearance of the Day: Hey, what happened to the Sea Level Records website? Why has it been replaced with some cheesy web ad? What's going on? If you work at Sea Level, please fill me in!

I'm never gonna lay down and die for you...
The New York Times Magazine out-did itself yesterday with its "Fashion of the Times" issue! Britney goes all vampy glam while talking about guilty pleasures, Donatella Versace drawls her way through another interview, and there's even a "Honky Tonk Angels" photo spread, featuring the inimitable Emmylou Harris.

And it looks like that photo shoot was just a dry run for Britney's InStyle cover.

The Strokes PR department has been working nights & weekends, it seems. First, the track listing for the new album (still unnamed) has been announced. Following that is a massive cover story in this month's MOJO. Those wacky girls over at yhnr.org have all the scans for your viewing needs, naturally.

Guess who else has an album coming out on October 21st? The Shins! That's going to be such a fun record-buying day, I can hardly wait!

Hey, you San Francisco readers, hurry over to Amoeba on Thursday night for your free Guided By Voices show. That's right, you heard me. FREE. And I know the website says it's tonight, but I called. It's Thursday. Stop panicking.

And speaking of shows, I know it's a tad early, but I want to make sure we all know that Beth Orton is doing a show at Largo on September 30th. That's a much better venue than last year's House of Blues show, no?

Thanks to Triple Tremelo, we can all enjoy the new White Stripes video, which features Kate Moss pole-dancing. And that's it.

Psst! Hey! Come closer...do you want to hear the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album before it's out on September 2nd? I thought so.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, I'm afraid. The Game Show Network is starting a new show: "Who Wants To Be Governor of California?" MTV's 1990s heroine Kennedy is hosting. Sure. Fine. Whatever.

And finally, check out the Stephen Mackey website for some gloriously disturbing new artwork.

I was seventeen and you kept on changing...
At least there are some things right in the universe today. It is my thrill to tell you that yes, "Reading Rainbow" has been saved.

Maybe it's something in that late-summer New York air, but celebrities are abound in Manhattan these days. And even they get overcharged for umbrellas during those flash storms!

David Sedaris writes about his next-door neighbor, a 9-year-old hellion, for the family issue of The New Yorker.

John Payne over at the LA Weekly can't wrap his head around Jane's Addiction. He feels ignored by Perry, it seems. Don't we all, John, don't we all?

Hold up. Is what I read true? Did MOCA just invite The Mars Volta to play a show at the museum?! I'm there faster than you can say "Temporary Contemporary"!

Oh, and a big round of boos for the "new" edition of Calendar Live over at the Los Angeles Times website. Apparently you can only read the online content if you subscribe to the paper 7 days a week. Now if I subscribed, I wouldn't have to read it online, would I. Besides, I like the NY Times so much better. Yeah, I said it.

Anyone can go look at pictures done by Duchamp and Matisse, but the Getty now has a photography exhibit of the artists themselves by ex-Vogue editor Alexander Liberman. It's running through October 18th, but just go this weekend, okay?

Remember when I told you about that Chagall exhibit in Paris? It's finally made its way to U.S. shores with a brief stop at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I think we should organize some sort of modern art field trip for the fall--there's so much great stuff to see!

The Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood has my undying love (at least for this morning, anyway). Their August and September line-ups are just the cure for any back-to-school blues you might have.

Go check out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on September 6th, Grandaddy, Super Furry Animals, & Earlimart on September 19th, and The Dandy Warhols on September 24th. Bring me back a T-shirt.

Best Songs of the Day: Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to take a nice long nap, and when I woke up, KXLU was playing this fabulous song I had never heard. So I used super sleuthing skills and found out that it was "Plans Get Complex" by All-Time Quarterback, one of Ben Gibbard's many side projects. I have now listened to it 25,000 times and I am in love. When he sings "I was seventeen," my heart breaks in the best of ways.

I keep my head up high to ease my mind...
On behalf of the 12 Californians who aren't running for governor, I'd like to apologize for the state of our state, if you will. It's going to be tough to pick a worthy candidate. I mean, how can you choose between Gary Coleman, Angelyne (some of you non-LA people might not know who Angelyne is), AND the watermelon-smasher himself, Gallagher? Looks like Arnold's got some stiff competition.

Ooh, so lovely is the new Black Rebel Motocycle Club video. Watch and learn.

Brittany Murphy is going to release an album. A music album. With singing. Oh my.

How come American newspapers never have fun things like this? UK's Guardian has original short stories from an amazing group of authors, including Haruki Murakami, Dave Eggers, Michael Faber, and AM Homes.

If you're one of those people who doesn't break out in hives while shopping on Sunset Plaza, your day's about to get a little bit brighter. Fresh is opening a new store along Sunset. Now it'll be that much easier to buy that nectarine milk soap that smells so good, you want to eat it. Maybe.

For those of you here on the westside, I cannot recommend the new Whole Foods on Wilshire & 22nd enough. It's so soothing, and everything is healthy and fresh and smiling! Plus their spicy tuna sushi is amazing. Skip the massage next time and head here instead.

What happens when the Strokes meet Jackie O?

Check out the fabulously informative yhnr.org for more scans from this week's NME.

Redundant Name of the Day Award: This one goes out to Ryan Adams, who's naming his new album "Rock 'n Roll". Oh, come on. At least pretend to give it some effort.
